YEREVAN, February 5. /ARKA/. Suren Melik-Israelyan, the head of a State Revenue Committee (SRC) department in charge of international cooperation has been appointed as Armenia's new customs attaché in Brussels.

Starting March 17, he will represent Armenia's customs interests in the European Union and the World Customs Organization (WCO).

The SRC quoted Melik-Israelyan as saying in a press release that he plans to step up work with international structures located in Brussels to maintain the country's customs service's high rating.

"At the moment, the role of the customs attaché in the EU and the WCO is more than important. The possibility of close communication with various international structures will contribute to the correct presentation of customs-related reforms in our country and, therefore, to the development of trade relations," he said.

Melik-Israelyan said also regular meetings with the business community will be held to identify problems arising in the process of trade and to explain the simplified customs procedures and advantages established by Armenian legislation to the local business community.

The term of service of the new attaché, appointed by the decision of the Prime Minister, is 3 years; however, it can be extended for another year.

A joint Armenia-EU committee on customs issues, established under the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and EU will start operations in March 2021 along with steps to be taken to improve Armenia's standing in cross-border trade criteria in the Doing Business rating. -0-
