YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. The Armenian parliament ratified on Friday an agreement on the country's accession to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), which was founded in 2001 in Paris.

Minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan said Armenia’s membership in the organization will allow the country to join OIV member countries for the exchange of information, scientific and technological developments.

According to him, the organization today comprises about 50 countries, including several CIS countries. Armenia was officially declared a full-fledged member of the organization on the 14th November 2014 at a meeting of the organization in Argentina. Karapetyan stressed that the annual membership fee is 13,500 euros. He said as a first step Armenia is planning to hold a tasting of Armenian wines in the spring of 2016 in Paris.

According to Armenia's National Statistics Service, production of wine in Armenia in the first 9 months of 2015 amounted to nearly 4 million liters, an increase of 5.2% from the same period last year. According to the Customs Service, exports of Armenian wines in 2014 totaled $6.3 million, by 1.5 times more than in the previous year.

According to the head of the Union of Armenian Winemakers Avag Harutyunyan, this year's grape harvest is record high at about 305,000 metric tons. He also predicted that production of Armenian brandy and wine in 2016  will rise by the record 60%, while wine exports will jump by about 40-50%; that of brandy by 15%.

The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), which replaced the International Vine and Wine Office, was established by the Agreement of 3 April 2001.

The OIV is an intergovernmental organization of a scientific and technical nature of recognized competence for its works concerning vines, wine, wine-based beverages, table grapes, raisins and other vine-based products.-0-
