YEREVAN, September 25. /ARKA/. Contrary to recent media reports that the Russian Railways may stop operating in Armenia's territory, Armenian Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toganyan said that his country's government intends to develop cooperation with the Russian company. He is quoted by TASS as saying when asked about possible termination of the company's operation in Armenia that the government has no such plans. "Quite the opposite - we intend to develop investments projects with the Russian Railways," the ambassador said.
Earlier, RTVI reported referring to its source that the Russian Railways OJSC was going to terminate the contract with the Armenian authorities stating that they are hobbling the work of its subsidiary South Caucasus Railway, which runs the Armenian Railways. Later the press office of the Russian transport ministry told TASS that the Russian side was considering all ways to terminate the contract with the Armenian side.
The company's relations with the Armenian authorities have become tense because of searches and criminal case opened over the company's activity. In particular, the South Caucasus Railway is suspected of tax evasion - the skim money amounts to $19,000.
Later, the Investigative Committee of Armenia reported about a criminal case opened against a former transport minister, who had hided the abuses found out at the company.
Besides, in 2018, the Investigative Committee launched a scrutiny to see the company's one-decade activity and the effectiveness of the investments totaling $226.8 million. The company's administration was unhappy about that.
