YEREVAN, October 16. /ARKA/. Armenia International Airports, a company running the Shirak airport in Armenia's second-largest town of Gyumri is ready to invest about $20 million in the modernization of the facility, said Marcelo Wende, the company's CEO.
He said it is important that the airport develops as the government is also interested in it. 'We plan to invest approximately $20 million to upgrade the airport," he said on Wednesday at a press conference convened in connection with the advent of the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair to Armenia.
Ryanair is set to begin regular flights from Yerevan to Rome and Milan in Italy starting January 2020. Starting next summer flights will be operated from Yerevan to Berlin, Germany and from Gyumri to Memmingen, also in Germany.
Shirak Airport is an international airport serving Gyumri and the province of Shirak, Armenia. The airport was inaugurated in 1961, and is the second largest airport in the country, after Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport
In 2007, Armenia International Airports released funds for the major repair of its runway and a new Finnish-made IDMAN light alarm system was installed there. Recently, the airport's rescue and fire service was equipped with the modern Striker-3000.
The Shirak airport as well as the Zvartnots airport in Yerevan are run by the Armenia International Airports company that belongs to American International Airports, an Argentine company owned by Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine entrepreneur of Armenian descent. ($ 1 - 476.57 drams)
