YEREVAN, June 30. /ARKA/. Armenia’s government is negotiating the opening of an alternative road for its vehicles to Russia after the border crossing Upper Lars on Georgian-Russian border was closed for traffic following a huge landslide, Armenian transport and communications minister Gagik Beglaryan said today.

According to him, Armenian trucks can reach Russia through Georgia’s breakaway South Ossetia. ‘The road running from South Ossetia to Russia is in good condition, but this issue requires a serious political decision,’ Beglaryan said.

‘Very little depends on Armenia in this issue, but we are in talks with the Russian and Georgian sides to have the South Ossetian option operate  at least temporarily,’ said Beglaryan, adding that in view of  serious political differences between Georgia and South Ossetia the probability of opening of this road is 50 to 50.

Speaking at a government session today economic integration and reform minister Vatche Gabrielyan said the traffic through Upper Lars will open in 2-3 weeks.

Meantime, Armenian companies have to transport their goods by ferryboats running from Georgian Black sea port of Poti and Batumi to Russian Novorossiysk. -0-
