YEREVAN, December 29. /ARKA/. Armenia’s agricultural resources are too limited to replace Turkey in the Russian market, the minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan told a news conference on Monday.
Russia’s government announced sanctions against Turkey in late November, banning imports of fruit and vegetables in response to downing of a Russian war plane by Turkey.
Speaking at his last news conference in 2015 Sergo Karapetyan said Armenia just wants to increase the exports of fruits and vegetables to the Russian Federation, the main market of Armenian agricultural exports.
According to him, Turkey’s climatic conditions allow it to grow agricultural products 12 months of the year without having to heat greenhouses.
He said transportation of Armenian-grown produces to Russia is another major problem since the only road to the north goes through Upper Lars checkpoint on Georgian-Russian border which is closed periodically, especially in winter.
However, he said that work is underway to increase the production of agricultural products and encourage exports.-0-
