Armenia’s SRC accuses some of its customs officers of being bribed

Armenia's State Revenue Committee (SRC) said on Tuesday that some of its customs officers were involved in the smuggling of apples grown in Azerbaijan to Armenia through neighboring Georgia.

YEREVAN, May 3. /ARKA/. Armenia's State Revenue Committee (SRC) said on Tuesday that some of its customs officers were involved in the smuggling of apples grown in Azerbaijan to Armenia through neighboring Georgia. It said that they were bribed by smugglers to allow illegal tax-free imports of the apples to the country.
According to a SRC statement, the customs officers as well as the individuals engaged in "illegal entrepreneurship" will be prosecuted on corresponding charges.
In a related development the State Food Safety Service said it had halted the sales of over 500 kg of Azerbaijani apples, discovered at some local stores.
The Azerbaijani apples were first detected by ordinary citizens who posted angry comments on social media making Armenia’s Food Safety Service begin inspecting stores nationwide on April 23. -0-
