Armenia to use EBRD funds to modernize Meghri border checkpoint

The Armenian parliament on Friday ratified a loan agreement on the modernization of the Meghri border checkpoint that was signed between Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. The Armenian parliament on Friday ratified a loan agreement on the modernization of the Meghri border checkpoint that was signed between Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
According to the agreement, a total of 21.2 million euros will be provided to Armenia for the modernization and expansion of the Meghri checkpoint.
Of that amount 10.7 million euros will be provided as a loan and 10.5 million euros as a grant by the EU. Armenia has already modernized its northern checkpoints on the border with Georgia and the modernization of the Meghri checkpoint on the border with Iran in the south will contribute to the activation of the North-South transport corridor, stimulating transit traffic.
According to preliminary estimates, the project cost is 13.96 billion drams. The total area of the checkpoint will be 8.7 hectares. A 2-storey office building will be built on an area of 4 thousand square meters, and an area of 1.5 thousand square meters will be allocated for the construction of a solar power plant. -0-
