Armenian food safety watchdog denies reports about sale of Azerbaijani watermelons
YEREVAN, August 14. /ARKA/. Armenia’s State Food Safety Service has denied today media reports claiming that a large batch of watermelons being sold in the country might haven been imported from Azerbaijan.

In a statement provided to Arka news agency, the food safety watchdog said in July and August watermelons were imported to Armenia exclusively from Georgia and Russia - in total, 1,327 tons, of which 781 tons were imported only in the last week. The bulk - 1,217 tons out of 1,327 tons- was  imported from Russia – and only 110 tons were brought from Georgia.

The State Food Safety Service said also a monitoring of the market  revealed  that Russian watermelons are brought from Astrakhan region.

The food safety watchdog said media reports did not provide any evidence that Azerbaijani watermelons were sold in Armenia saying media outlets should not  disseminate unchecked  and untrue information.

The State Food safety Service  also reminded that imported vegetables and fruits go through mandatory phytosanitary examination at border crossings, and an inspection is conducted to detect possible quarantine pests and diseases, and in case of suspicion, the goods are sent for laboratory testing. -0-
