Armenian government extends ban on rawhide exports
YEREVAN, January 4. /ARKA/. The Armenian government has extended today the ban on rawhide exports.
The previous ban was supposed to be in effect until January 22, 2024, but according to today's decision, it has been extended until July 22 this year.
The ban, imposed in June 2021, applies to both Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and third countries. The ban has caused a boom in the development of the local leather industry. About half of the output is semi-finished leather (wet blue leather) and the rest is finished tanned leather.
As a result, local shoe factories have reduced purchases of finished leather from abroad and switched to local raw materials.
There is a tannery in Yerevan, as well as workshops in Masis and Gyumri. The latter was opened in 2022 and is now preparing to expand production by increasing the number of employees from 5 to 10. The company is also considering export opportunities to Pakistan and Israel.
The volume of leather dressing production in Armenia has grown to 4-4.3 million square decimeters. With full utilization of production capacities, this figure can be increased by 1.5 and more times.
According to the government, the extension of the ban will help in the implementation of these plans. --0--
