YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. The Armenian Parliament has adopted today in the second and final reading a set of amendments to the Water Code calling for the liquidation of the National Water Council.
The amendments stem from a government decision made in February 2019 to dissolve the National Water Council and hand its powers to the Ministry of Environment.
Environment Minister Erik Grigoryan specified that the ministry will be responsible for providing conclusions on whether to permit or not construction of those small hydropower plants, which do not have water basin management schemes. It will also provide permissions on the use of groundwater in the Ararat Valley.
As of September 2019, there were 188 small hydropower plants in Armenia.
The parliament has also approved today in the second and final reading a string of amendments to the Law on Water Use by companies and unions of water users.
Mikael Melkumyan, an member of the parliament from the Prosperous Armenia party, said the amendments are aimed at ensuring common standards for all water users, as well as providing everyone with equal conditions in case of shortage of water resources.-0-
