YEREVAN, November 9. / ARKA /. Armenian transport and communications minister Gagik Beglaryan praised today the South-Caucasus Railway, a Russian-run company operating Armenia's rail roads, describing its performance as 'effective.'

'The company plays a very important role in Armenia’s transport sector,' he said.

Under Armenia's 2016 draft budget the company is set to receive a 349 million dram subsidy to cover its losses caused by a drop in the overall number of passengers traveling by commuter trains and the drop in the transportation of goods because of objective reasons. According to SCR CEO Sergey Valko, the negative trend in the railway traffic continues.

South Caucasus Railways is a 100% subsidiary of state-run Russian Railways that was awarded a concesional management of SCR. The 30 year contract was signed in 2008. It can be prolonged for another 10 years. .-0-
