YEREVAN, April 20. /ARKA/. Citizens of Armenia most often use electronic transactions to pay for goods bought abroad, Tigran Hovhannisyan, the head of a department at Ameriabank in charge of servicing payment cards, said today when presenting the findings of a study on e-commerce in Armenia and the prospects of its development.

According to him, online transactions grew in Armenia sharply in 2015 and 2016. In particular, in 2014, the amount of online transactions grew by 2.4%, in 2015 they surged by 89.1%, and by 79.3% in 2016.

"This is a long-lasting trend as growth is being reported both in terms of money and the number of transactions. The cost of an average bill is also growing," Hovhannisyan said.

He said also that Ameria Group of Companies conducted a survey among 1,200 people to find out how frequently they use the online shopping service. According to the survey, 18% of local banks' clients in 9 large cities made online purchases in the last 12 months. In Yerevan the figure was 21%.

He said citizens aged 25-34 are the most active in making electronic purchases, 41% of them are men and only 22% are women. The fewest electronic transactions, in his words, were made by citizens in the age category over 55, where only 3% of respondents (both men and women) make electronic purchases.

He noted that most often Armenian citizens make electronic transactions to buy goods abroad (15.7% of transactions), while payment of state duties and penalties account for 9.4%, and payments for goods purchased within Armenia account for 8.2%.

Less often, Armenian citizens use online commerce to pay for services abroad (4.3%), for public services (3.8%), and for purchase of other services in Armenia (3%).

"Despite the fact that online services in Armenia are in the least demand, in our opinion it is the most promising in terms of growth as Internet commerce  is just beginning to develop here , and companies in the service sector are beginning to be interested in entering the network, "Hovhannisyan said. --0--
