Armenia attaches strategic importance to air transport service, since the country remains half-blockaded, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Tuesday at a summit of the Corporación América leadership, as the government’s press office reports.
Welcoming the idea of holding the Summit in Armenia, the prime minister pointed out that the activities of the Eurnekian family are highly appreciated in our country.
“In these circumstances, air transport is especially important,” said. “Of course, it is pleasant to see the positive results produced in this area and we are optimistic for the future.”
In his words, the Eurnekian family and the Corporación América it owns have managed implant a new air transportation culture in Armenia through Zvartnots International Airport, which is run by the Armenia – International Airports that belongs to Corporación América.
“We are proud of our airport, since we see that it meets the best international standards,” Pashinyan said. “We are convinced that it will give us new grounds for pride soon.”
The premier stressed the importance of the measures being taken to enhance Zvartnots International Airport’s handing capacity.
“We are now speaking about expansion of Zvartnots Airport – this is a pretty good word that the airport reaches its maximum traffic capacity,” he said.
In this context, Pashinyan stressed the importance of cooperation between the government and the private sector.
“The next problem I would like to touch upon at this representative meeting is the following: unfortunately, the activities and volumes of local air carriers in the Republic of Armenia are not the same as we would like, as befits an independent, sovereign state,” Pashinyan is quoted by the press office as saying at the summit.
“This should be the next direction of our cooperation so that the government and Zvartnots International Airport, the company Corporación América, in cooperation with each other, could create conditions for the emergence of an Armenian air carrier or carriers and their competitiveness. In essence, these are the main, key and strategic directions that we have already discussed several times with Mr. Eurnekian, but this does not mean that the activities of the Eurnekian family and “Corporación América” are limited to those that have been noted.”
USD 12 million has been invested in the Zvartnots Airport’s runway repair carried out in April and May.
According to the Prime Minister, winemaking is the second sphere, where the activities of the Eurnekian family boasted a turning point.
The head of government added that winemaking is currently developing in the Republic of Armenia, and the contribution of the Eurnekian family in this area is invaluable.
“The establishment of Karas Company and the production of Karas wine gave new energy to this sphere and, in fact, caused the revival of winemaking in Armenia. We are grateful to Corporación América and to the Eurnekians for this activity. It is not by chance that Eduardo Eurnekian is the National Hero of the Republic of Armenia. This high title expresses the contribution that he made to the development of the Republic of Armenia, and we are confident that he will continue to make further contributions,” Pashinyan said.
Armenia’s Zvartnots Airport and Shirak Airport are run by the Armenia – International Airports in accordance with a 30-year concession management agreement sealed with Armenian government in 2001.
