YEREVAN, October 4. /ARKA/. A businessman in Armenia’s Armavir province, Gagik Khachatryan, is growing cotton in Armenia, for the first time over the last 30 years, according to the official Facebook page of the Armenian government.

Khachatryan has launched this business with the assistance of experts from Tajikistan, a traditional cotton growing nation. A Tajik specialist Harilo Abdilov is quoted as saying that he was amazed  by the fertility of the Armenian soil.

"Fields in Armenia are very well suited for growing cotton, and here I get twice as much cotton per hectare as in Tajikistan," said Abdilov.

In the 20s-30s of the last century there were a lot of cotton fields in the valley of the Araks River in Armenia: they exceeded 4% of the total acreage of the valley. In the city of Armavir there was a cotton gin plant. From the end of the 30s, the land under crops began to dwindle , and from the 60s cotton fields gave way to more familiar vineyards. -0-
