Energy ministry: Armenia’s renewable energy resource is inexhaustible
YEREVAN, May 17. /ARKA/. Armenia’s renewable energy resource is inexhaustible, Hayk Harutyunyan, deputy minister of energy infrastructures and natural resources, said Wednesday at a renewable energy conference in Yerevan.

“The potential of solar energy alone is 6,000 megawatt,” he said answering ARKA News Agency’s question.

In his words, more than 100 small solar plants emerged in Armenia in three or four months, and their number is growing from day to day.

It is only necessary to use them properly and to create necessary infrastructures.

Harutyunyan said that Armenia’s energy area is attractive to all investors for its predictability, stable energy system, investment programs and legislative guarantees.

“It can be said that ideal conditions are created,” he said.

The deputy minister said that Armenia has programs which can be presented to American investors.

“In particular, I mean the tender Armenia has announced to build a 55-megawatt solar plant in Masrik,” he said adding that the tender is expected to result in a lowest cost.

Earlier, Harutyunyan said that the project is estimated to cost $40 to 60 million.

He also said that American investors’ interest in Armenia’s energy industry doesn’t mean that it will have adverse impacts on the atomic energy.

“These two segments of energy are not mutually exclusive,” he said. “All countries, including Armenia, are seeking maximum diversification.”

Some measures are planned to be taken over a period between 2016 and 2020 to reduce consumption of primary energy resources (electric power, gas, diesel, firewood etc.) by 38% in 2020, compared with 2010.

Now the renewable energy accounts for one-third of Armenia’s total energy balance. Implementation of all the planned programs is expected to increase its share a great deal.

An investment program aimed at renewable energy development and energy efficiency and worth $58 million was launched in Armenia in summer 2015.

The program was launched with support from Climate Investment Funds, the Armenian energy and natural resources ministry, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

The main round of the measures to be taken as part of the program kicks off in 2017.

Upon completion of the program 40-50-megawatt solar plants are planned to be built. They will be ready for commissioning by 2020.

Seven American and more than 70 Armenian companies are taking part in the conference.

The event is organized by the U.S. embassy in Armenia, the Armenian energy infrastructures and natural resources ministry and Contour Global Company. --0---
