YEREVAN, August 12. /ARKA/. As of August 12 exports of fresh Armenian fruits and vegetables to Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) have surged by 90% from the year before, deputy minister of agriculture Armen Harutyunyan said today without specifying. According to him, the growth was mainly driven by exports to Russia, Armenia’s traditional trade partner.
Harutyunyan said also that negotiations were underway with the Kazakh side to simplify logistics-related procedures for imports of Armenian products.
He added that the planned signing of free trade agreements with almost 10 countries will create new export opportunities for Armenia.
The deputy minister attributed the unprecedented rise in exports of fruits and vegetables to simplification of a long string of procedures - from the registration and obtaining export licenses to the customs clearance.
Another factor is the European Union and the US- imposed sanctions against Russia, as well as the growth of agricultural production in Armenia.
According to statistics, Armenia's exports to EEU in the first half of 2016 increased by 83.7% to $174.6 million. The exports from Armenia to Russia increased in the meantime by 87.4% to $168 million. --0-
