YEREVAN, February 23. /ARKA/. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization is ready to help Armenia in developing its resources saving agriculture, Vahan Amirkhanyan, head of the program told ARKA News Agency.
The technical assistance is decided as part of the European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD).
Amirkhanyan said that Armenia’s problem is the special machinery shortage, which hobbles development of resources saving agriculture. The country has only four seeding machines.
He said that appropriate centers are to be established in six provinces, to train farmers to enable them to use this machinery.
Amirkhanyan said the program has a few directions, including efforts to lessen risks of natural disasters, to enhance adaptation to natural disasters, soil fertility maintenance and land management.
”We have also conducted a study to gauge impacts of climate changes on the soil degradation process and have submitted a package of proposals to preserve land in Armenia,” he said adding that some thing is already being done now in Shirak and Lori provinces.
The program of technical assistance to the Armenian agriculture ministry as part of EU-financed ENPARD was launched in 2015 and will be wrapped up in 2017. Its total cost is €2 million. -0----
