YEREVAN, December 14. /ARKA/. Since the beginning of December Armenian law-enforcement authorities have opened 4 criminal cases for illegal fishing in Lake Sevan involving a total of seven persons, deputy chief of State Nature Protection Inspection Igor Sargsyan said today.

The fishing in the lake was prohibited from December 1 to January 10, 2017. Speaking to a news conference Sargsyan said some of poachers manage to transport the illegally caught fish to the capital city.

Sargsyan argued that the most effective way to fight poaching is stop buying the poached fish. "When there is no demand, there will be no sale ", - said Sargsyan.

In turn, Bardukh Gabrielyan, director of Zoology and Hydroecology Research Center, an affiliation of the National Academy of Sciences, added that cases of illegal fishing in 2016 have decreased compared with previous years.

"Of course, poaching has not stopped, but the local population has to understand that in case of termination of illegal fishing, the fish stock in the lake will increase. Unfortunately, 70-80% of the total stock are small fish,' - Gabrielyan said.

Whitefish reserves in Lake Sevan in 2016 are estimated at 450 metric tons. In 2016, the reserve of carp fell heavily to 90-100 tons.  Trout reserves remain unchanged at 1-1.5 tons. -0--
