YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/.  The South Caucasus Railway transported a total of 648,600 tons of cargo in the first quarter, an increase of 6.1% against Q1 2012, the company’s press office reported.

Export traffic reached 95,300 tons in the reporting quarter, an increase of 1.8% from the year before. Import traffic was 229,000 tons in the period (1.7% reduction).

Freight volumes in local traffic reached 324,300 tons, a 15.3% increase against the year before.

Average carloading per day rose 12.7%. In turn, average daily discharge increased by 7%.

“The railway is gradually increasing its key performance indicators, including the volume of freight traffic. We achieved these results thanks to SCR flexible tariff policy aimed at reducing transport costs in the price of the goods transported”, the company reports.

Improved reliability of railway infrastructure helped reduce delivery time and loss or damage risks, claims the company.

South Caucasus Railway cjsc is a 100% subsidiary of Russian Railways open joint stock company that is operating Armenian railways under a 30-year concession contract signed in 2008. The contract can be extended for another 10 years. -0-
