YEREVAN, August 28. /ARКА/. The Armenian government has approved a draft presidential decree on the approval of the grant agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the development of a program for environmental restoration and regeneration of the Nairit plant.

According to the agreement, a grant of $1.5 million is proposed to be allocated for neutralizing equipment and chemical waste at the Nairit chemical plant, thereby enhancing the environmental conditions within the plant's premises.

The objective is to develop a project that addresses the public health and environmental risks associated with the plant.

The grant activities will encompass several components, including design and technical evaluation, along with an assessment of environmental and social risks.

Nairit, once a leading entity in the USSR's chemical industry, held a monopoly on synthetic rubber production. However, in 1989, it was closed due to pressure from the environmental movement, leaving approximately 13 thousand tons of hazardous waste on the site.-0-
