Import of milk powder dropped by 38 tons in five months

Imports of milk powder to Armenia in January-May 2015 were 38 metric tons down from the same time span in 2014 falling to 688 metric tons, minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan said today as he was visiting several dairy companies.

YEREVAN, June 12. / ARKA /. Imports of milk powder to Armenia in January-May 2015 were 38 metric tons down from the same time span in 2014 falling to 688 metric tons, minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan said today as he was visiting several dairy companies.
The minister was quoted as saying in a press release that milk production depends on seasonal factors reaching maximum in May and June as a result of which dairy plants do not have time to buy the whole volume of milk produced by farmers.
An exception is Mariana company that operates at its full capacity purchasing 200 tons of milk a day. He said dairy producers are paying now 120-130 drams per one liter of milk, significantly down from several months ago.
The minister said he knew that in some communities milk dealers paid 100-110 drams per one liter, causing the anger of farmers. He said the ministry is taking steps to address this problem.
According to the National Statistical Service, in April milk production amounted to 87,000 tons, an increase of 6% compared to April 2014. The highest rate of milk production was recorded in Gegarkunik region – 17,200 tons. ($ 1 - 476.62 drams). -0-
