YEREVAN, November 29. /ARKA/. A delegation headed by Suren Karayan, Armenian economic development and investments minister, has visited the territory of Meghri Free Economic Zone, the ministry’s press office reported on Wednesday.
The minister, accompanied by Gagik Martirosyan, general advisor to the country’s prime minister, architects, constructors and business people, saw what had been done at the first stage of the construction and heard about some problems.
The construction is coming to an end and the opening ceremony is scheduled for December 15.
It has been reported earlier that the construction of a free economic zone in Meghri was estimated to cost $32 million, where capital spending amounted to $28 million.
This is one of the ministry’s top-priority programs, which implies creation of a free economic zone on 10-15 hectares with expansion up to 45-50 hectares in the future.
More than ten companies from Russia, Iran and Europe have already expressed their willingness to work in the zone.
The economic development and investments ministry says the free economic zone will make it possible to open 2,500 jobs and increase exports from Armenia by 30%.
The main aim of its creation is to develop trade and economic relations with Iran and other countries of the region, develop Syunik province and to present Armenia as a link connecting Iran with other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and Georgia.
As many as 100 to 120 companies are likely to operate in the zone. Their earnings for ten years are estimated to total $52 million.
These companies’ products are planned to be exported to Iran, the Eurasian Economic Union countries, the Middle East, Turkmenistan etc. Total investments of all these companies are expected to reach $350-400 million over this decade.
The operation of the free economic zone has already been confirmed in the Eurasian Economic Union’s customs code. As many as seven such zones will operate here in duty-free mode. --0---
