YEREVAN, December 21. /ARKA/. The Armenian parliament has passed today in the third and final reading a package of amendments to the law on agricultural cooperatives and the Civil Code.
Deputy minister of agriculture Robert Makaryan said the revised law on agricultural cooperatives is expected to encourage more farmers to join their efforts for a better management of their agricultural assets.
According to him, the new law also defines the rights, duties and responsibilities of members of cooperatives, as well as government’s assistance to farmers united in cooperatives.
"Small agricultural structures are unable to perform effectively, while in cooperatives they can improve productivity by expanding the areas and reducing the cost of cultivation," said Makaryan.
According to him, there are already about 270 agricultural cooperatives in Armenia, which operate quite successfully. The government will assist in the formation of another 200 cooperative farms, he said.
The bill was passed at an extraordinary meeting of the parliament without 'detailed' consideration, which angered some MPs, who pointed out that such an important document should have been passed after a thorough consideration.
However, Makaryan, argued that the government considers the adoption of the bill as a priority saying it could be amended, if necessary, later. Presently , there are about 3,040 farms in Armenia.-- 0--
