YEREVAN, July 6. /ARKA/. The population of whitefish in Armenia’s largest Lake Sevan can be increased several times over 2-3 years, Bardukh Gabrielyan, director of Zoology and Hydroecology Research Center, an affiliation of the National Academy of Sciences, told a news conference today.

According to him, recent studies show that Lake Sevan has a total of 430 metric tons of commercial size whitefish (except for large specimens and fry).

"Based on the findings of our studies we regularly ask the government to ban commercial fishing in the lake for at least 12 months and step up anti-poaching activity during the spawning season. Unfortunately, poaching goes on,' Gabrielyan said.

"If we minimize poaching and maintain the current  growth rate, given whitefish’s high  reproduction rate in 2-3 years we will increase the commercial reserve of whitefish up to one thousand metric tons, which can be followed by partial catching under strict control of relevant bodies",  Gabrielyan said.

According to a joint Armenian-Russian study, in 1983 the lake had more than 10,700 tons of commercial fish reserve, in 2005 it slashed to 625 tons, in 2006 – to 253.6 tons, in 2009 it grew to 278.6 tons. In 2010 the population of whitefish was estimated at 300 tons.-0-
