President Sargsyan attends the reopening of Bagratashen border checkpoint

Armenia’s president Serzh Sargsyan traveled today to Tavush province to participate in a ceremony of reopening of the renovated Bagratashen checkpoint on the border with Georgia.

YEREVAN, November 4. /ARKA/. Armenia’s president Serzh Sargsyan traveled today to Tavush province to participate in a ceremony of reopening of the renovated Bagratashen checkpoint on the border with Georgia. The ceremony was attended also by a Georgian delegation, led by prime minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.
The total budget of a program designed to upgrade the border checkpoints on Armenia-Georgian border is 52,130,000 euros. The purpose is to promote free movement of people and goods across borders, improve both bilateral and regional cooperation, upgrade checkpoints Bagratashen, Bavra and Gogavan in accordance with international standards. The modernization of the border checkpoints is supposed to also contribute to improving the living standards of the local population due to creation of temporary, and later permanent job.

At the ceremony the two leaders officially announced the construction of a new bridge on Georgia-Armenia border, slated to begin next year.
Building the new bridge, named Friendship Bridge, at the Sadakhlo-Bagratashen border checkpoint will be completed in less than two years. The bridge will pass over Debed River and ease traffic travelling between the two nations. Currently this border crossing area has only a single narrow bridge, built in Soviet times.
Construction expenses will be covered by a 10.3 million loan provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) through the support of the two countries’ governments.
After the border checkpoint opening Sargsyan and Kvirikashvili discussed prospects of further developing the friendly neighborly relations and bilateral cooperation in a range of fields. The discussion also covered the issue of further deepening transport and energy cooperation. -0-
