YEREVAN, January 10. /ARKA/. As usual, vendors in Armenia raised prices of food and other goods ahead of the New Year holidays, Karen Chilingaryan, the head of Center for Consumer Advice NGO, told a news conference today.
According to him, the prices of vegetables and exotic fruits raised sharply. ‘Every year, we urge citizens to make holiday purchases 10-15 days in advance, however, our people are used to making their New Year shopping on the last day of the year," said Chilingaryan.
He said the price of tangerines increased from 400-600 to 700-1000 drams per kg. "The same thing happened with bananas, pineapple, etc. These price fluctuations have become a traditions," he said, stressing that the main blame for the unfounded rise of prices lies on business entities and vendors who are trying to get the most revenue.
According to him, in comparison with previous years, the number of customers in local stores decreased.
"This is primarily indicative of the lowering solvency of Armenian citizens, as well as the high level of emigration," - added Chilingaryan. He noted that after the holidays, the prices of goods dropped immediately. -0-
