YEREVAN, February 11. /ARKA/. Private importers of cars have called on the Armenian government today to step in and eliminate the value added tax they have to pay when bringing cars from the Russian Federation.
Speaking at a news conference, one of them Poghos Oghlukyan, said there must not be such problem for Armenian car importers because Armenia and Russia are members of the Eurasian Economic Union.
He said this problem in Kazakhstan, which is also a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, was resolved in favor of car importers. According to him, if this problem is solved, then many citizens of Armenia would prefer to buy cars from Russia.
Another private car importer, Kamo Marutyan, added that the difference between the VAT payments for the import of cars to Armenia from Russia (an EEU member) and Georgia (not an EEU member) is only 2%.
"When importing cars from Russia, we pay a 30% VAT and a 32% VAT when importing cars from Georgia, which is closer to Armenia,’ Marutyan said.
According to the Armenian Customs Service, some 46,500 vehicles were imported to Armenia in 2014 against 41,100 in 2013. In 2014 customs duties levied on imported cars totaled 45.7 billion drams, an increase of 9% when compared to 2013.
Moreover, some 1,900 cars imported in 2014 were Russia-made, a decline of 19.8% from the previous year. They generated 1.347 billion drams of customs duties. -0-
