YEREVAN, September 20. /ARKA/. The reconstruction of the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border expected to be over in mid 2022 will increase its capacity 6.5 times, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia Dmitry Volvach told reporters  in Yerevan today.

Volvach is in a delegation of Russian entrepreneurs who arrived in Armenia to participate in a business forum titled “Armenian-Russian Economic Cooperation. Perspective Projects.’

The Upper Lars border crossing is the only overland route connecting Armenia with Russia. In winter, it is often closed because of the threat of avalanches. In spring and autumn the road is shut down by the threat of mudslides.

"In addition to far-reaching political tasks, work to remove barriers to trade is being carried out at the highest level, including the development of a regulatory settlement. It is clear that there are certain difficulties, including because the reconstruction of Upper Lars is underway," Volvach said.

He said the reconstruction of the checkpoint on the Russian side of the border should be completed by mid-2020. The throughput of the checkpoint will increase 6.5 times to 2,650 vehicles per day with a possible expansion to 3,000 vehicles.

According to him, this will be a serious practical step in the development of bilateral interaction and interaction within the Eurasian Economic Union to increase trade and facilitate the work of those  business people who are engaged in the supply of products both from the Republic of Armenia to Russia and in the opposite direction. --0--
