Representatives of event-managing businesses in Armenia want government to recoup their coronavirus-caused losses
YEREVAN, July 28. /ARKA/. Representatives of event-organizing businesses met yesterday for discussing their problems and their meeting was resulted in a statement issued by Ashot Barseghyan, an expert in public catering.

He said in the statement that this sector provides about 20,000 jobs with an annual turnover of about $ 300 million.

"As you know, since March 2020, the activities of our sphere have been terminated due to quarantine. We all expressed our readiness to comply with quarantine, incur financial losses, but support the state at any cost to overcome this catastrophe that befell the country," Barseghyan said.

However, he said, after the quarantine, the government liberalized almost all areas but event-organizing businesses, and allowed the activities of all public catering facilities, except for restaurant complexes in this area.

Barseghyan says the government has applied restrictions that do not reflect reality and  threaten the existence of our sphere.

It is emphasized that the owners of all restaurants assure that they are fully prepared to comply with anti-epidemic requirements, including additional ones set by the Commandant's Office.

"We ask the government and representatives of the government's economic bloc to answer one simple question: when will the activities of our sphere be allowed?"

On behalf of the representatives of the sphere, Barseghyan asked questions about whether the government is ready to cover the losses incurred by the businesses and whether it is ready to take care of the social security of about 20,000 people working in the sector, as well as what concrete steps are being taken in this direction.

“Our main demand that we are going to make to the government is based on the simple fact that the declared state of emergency in the country has completely limited the activities of our sector. The government is obliged to develop programs aimed at supporting it. We remind you that we have started a detailed inventory of the losses sustained by all businesses in this area," he said.

A state of emergency in order to curb the spread of coronavirus was declared in Armenia on March 16, 2020, and then extended four times for a month. Thus, according to the government's decision of July 13, the state of emergency is in effect in Armenia until 17:00 on August 12.

At the same time, restrictions on free movement and some types of economic activity introduced from March 24 were lifted from May 4, and from May 18, public transport, gyms, kindergartens and catering facilities were resumed.
