YEREVAN, August 21, /ARKA/. Russia settled the last foreign debt inherited from the former Soviet Union, Lenta.rureported, citing a statement by the Russian finance ministry. According to the finance ministry, the $125.2 million debt was paid to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was due under trade deals between the Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia.
"Bosnia-Herzegovina was the last foreign state creditor of the former USSR... for which the debt was still outstanding," the statement said.
Russia assumed the entire foreign debt of the Soviet Union after it dissolved in 1991 and its constituent republics became independent. The debt was estimated at around $70 billion, most of which was accumulated during the final six years of the Soviet regime.
In 2006 Russia reimbursed more than $20 billion in advance to 17 creditor countries in the Club of Paris group. Over the past 20 years Russia forgave over $140 billion owed to it by other countries. Particularly, it forgave $30 billion debt to Cuba and $11 billion to North Korea.-0-
