YEREVAN March 2. /ARKA/. The Russian food safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said it was concerned over the significant increase in the imports of fresh tomatoes from Armenia, Egypt and Azerbaijan.
It said exports of fresh tomatoes from Armenia in the first two months of 2016 surged to 1000 metric tons. By the way, no fresh tomatoes had been exported to Russia in the first two months of 2015.
At the same time, shipments of fresh tomatoes from Egypt and Azerbaijan increased to 2,000 and 3,500 metric tons respectively.
"Due to this situation, Rosselkhoznadzor intends to hold telephone conversations with authorized representatives for quarantine and protection of plants in these countries", the watchdog said in a statement.
Earlier in February, Rosselkhoznadzor denied allegations that it had banned the import of 22 tons of tomatoes from Armenia to Krasnodar province because of detecting South American tomato moths. -0-
