SCR stops running train to Georgian Batumi

The South Caucasus Railways (SCR), a Russian-run company operating Armenia’s railroads, said in a press release today that it had transported a total of 50,300 passengers this year by Yerevan- Batumi- Yerevan train, up from 42,100 passengers in the same time span last year.

YEREVAN, October 2. / ARKA /. The South Caucasus Railways (SCR), a Russian-run company operating Armenia’s railroads, said in a press release today that it had transported a total of 50,300 passengers this year by Yerevan- Batumi- Yerevan train, up from 42,100 passengers in the same time span last year.

The company said it stopped running the train to Batumi, a popular destination for Armenian holiday makers, on the coast of Georgia’s Black Sea, from October 1.

It said also this summer the passengers were able to buy tickets online. The train had also a buffet and plans to run a restaurant beginning from next year. On October 2 the SCR will start running a train to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. 

"The international passenger traffic of SCR is growing every year. Compared to January-September 2008 it has increased by 296% while the passenger traffic from Yerevan to Batumi and back by 6 times,’ it said.

South Caucasus Railways is a 100% subsidiary of state-run Russian Railways that was awarded a concesional management of SCR. The 30 year contract was signed in 2008. It can be prolonged for another 10 years. -0-
