YEREVAN, July 31. / ARKA /. At a recurrent session on July 30 the Armenian government approved the signing of an agreement with the European Union on Armenia’s participation in a program designed to improve the competitiveness of local small and medium-sized enterprises. The program’s duration is from 2014 to 2020.

Prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan said the program had been discussed at his meeting with the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk during the latter’s recent visit to Armenia, who expressed readiness to contribute to its implementation.

"The main objective of the program is to allow Armenian SMEs to use various EU initiatives aimed at business development. In particular, participation in the program will provide them with an opportunity to receive co-financing in the framework of the European network of companies, significantly raising their s efficiency,' said Abrahamyan.

According to him, with the assistance of the National Centre for Development of Small and Medium Enterprises of Armenia local SMEs will get a chance to participate in various open tenders for grants.

According to the Union of Employers of Armenia, there were about 70,000 SMEs in Armenia in late 2014, including 58,000 micro and small enterprises. SMEs accounted for 43% of Armenia’s GDP and for 5-6% of tax revenues.-0-
