YEREVAN, April 8. /ARKA/. The personnel of Spayka LLC have revolted against the Armenian authorities because of the arrest of their boss. They gathered today outside the court for a rally staged to back David Ghazaryan, the head of the company, who was detained today on charge of gross tax evasion.
The protesters demand a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Novosti-Armenia reports.
They find any charge against their chief unjust. They say their partners abroad will be unhappy about things and will issue a statement over this “infamous situation”. The company’s personnel praised activities of Spayka saying it helped dozens of companies for dozens of years. They also said that “the deserted Ararat Valley” started flourishing thanks to the company’s efforts.
The protesters said that civil unrest actions will be stage in a bid to shield Ghazaryan from prosecution.
Armenian company Spayka, is accused by Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (SRC) of large-scale tax evasion to the tune of 7 billion drams (the equivalent of more than $14).
Ghazaryan, speaking yesterday at a news conference, denied the charge – he said that of the mentioned amount AMD 5.5 billion are VAT payments, which must be returned to the company in accordance with the law. In response, the State Revenue Committee issued a press release presenting a list of all claims against Spayka.
Media sources also reported that the company ceased all its purchases amid the SRC’s statements.
However, the company said in a statement on Sunday it was going to export this year more than 100 thousand metric tons of agricultural products, as much as last year, to be bought from local farmers and to be grown on its own land if the company were allowed to continue operations.
The company said purchases are seasonal embracing 80 communities in nine provinces of the country- Armavir, Tavush, Lori, Vayots Dzor, Aragatsotn, Shirak, Gegharkunik and Kotayk regions.
Spayka founded in 2001, has been engaged in the export and sale of fruits and vegetables to Russia, CIS and European countries since 2007.
The company also manufactures packages, including boxes and pallets of foamed polystyrene. The company also develops intensive gardens. On March 26, Spayka commissioned a $15 million worth cheese factory. The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. --0---
