Stepanavan airport likely to resume operation later this year, deputy minister

The airport in Stepanavan in northern province of Lori will be ready to resume operation later this year, deputy minister of territorial administration and emergency situations Vache Terteryan told a parliamentary hearing on the implementation of the 2014 budget today.

YEREVAN, May 25. / ARKA /. The airport in Stepanavan in northern province of Lori will be ready to resume operation later this year, deputy minister of territorial administration and emergency situations Vache Terteryan told a parliamentary hearing on the implementation of the 2014 budget today.
He said a small team of experts is working now in Stepanavan. He said also the airport may be used by a large regional humanitarian center the creation of which Armenian and Russian authorities are negotiating now. He added that this issue will be submitted soon to parliament’s consideration.
He said the Armenian government expects the Russian side to support the resumption of operation of airports in Stepanavan and in Kapan, a town in the southern Armenia.
"We have an agreement on the deployment of one heavy and several light rescue and civil aircraft in these airports ," said Terteryan.
In mid-May, Armenian and Russian emergency ministries signed an intergovernmental agreement on the opening of a joint training and rescue center in Armenia which will allow prompt response to emergency situations in border areas of both, as well as in third countries.-0-
