YEREVAN, July 12. /ARKA/. The number of reported brucellosis incidents in 2015 were significantly down form the previous year, according to Hovhannes Mkrtchyan, the head of the Veterinary Department of the State Food Safety Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia.

Speaking at a UN FAO-organized conference today he said in 2015 some 909 cases of brucellosis in cattle had been reported and 603 cases in  sheep and goats. All these animals were subjected to sanitary slaughter, he added.

These numbers were down from 1,100 cases of brucellosis in cattle reported in 2014 and from as many cases reported in sheep and goats. According to him, 350 cases of the disease among cattle and 200 in sheep and goat have been revealed this year.

According to him, to more effectively combat against this diseases local authorities should increase the number of mandatory examination of animals. Now cattle are examined twice a year, while sheep and goats -once a year, which does not allow to identify sick animals in due time.

Mkrtchyan said some farmers refuse to slaughter the sick cattle because of distrust in the results of laboratory tests. He added that the meat of animals sick with brucellosis may be used only after heat treatment by processing plants. He said no compensation are provided for sick animals since farmers can sell the meat of sick animals to processing enterprises only.

The regions with least reported cases of brucellosis are Tavush and Lori, while the bulk of cases are registered in Kotayk, Ararat and Armavir regions.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection transmitted from infected animals to humans. It is characterized by multiple lesions of human organs and body systems. -0-
