YEREVAN, December 28. /ARKA/. Two local air companies applied for obtaining certificates for implementation of passenger transportation, Anna Chobanyan, head of the Armenian economy ministry department in charge of economic regulation in civil aviation, said last Friday.
She said the government has updated the certification process, having in particular, established a council that reviews all the applications for permission to provide air services. According to Chobanyan, the revised certification procedure is expected to rule out bankruptcies of airlines.
After the adoption of open sky policy, new airlines entered the Armenian market, particularly, the Aegean Airways, Georgian Airways, Iraqi Airways, Al Naser, Mahan Air, Middle East Airways, S7 Airlines, Czech Airlines and Polish Lot. Also Qatar Airways is negotiating with Armenian authorities the opening of Doha - Yerevan - Doha flights, Chobanyan said.
Acting on a recommendation by McKinsey & Company and the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia the Armenian government liberalized the domestic civil aviation sector in 2013 October saying that all local and foreign airlines meeting safety standards will be allowed to fly to and from Armenia without special authorizations or other restrictions. -0-
