YEREVAN, August 22. /ARKA/. The chairman of the Union of Armenian Winemakers Avag Harutyunyan predicted today a sharp rise in the purchase price of grapes this year, saying the French-owned Yerevan Brandy Company, the largest buyer of grape in the country, has not yet announced its price for the purchase of grape.
Speaking to reporters, he said the company’s announcement about the purchase price serves as an indicator for the local grape market. Harutyunyan argued that Pernod Ricard, the owner of Yerevan Brandy Company, is not in a hurry to indicate its price because of a poor grape crop in Georgia.
"Natural disasters this year in Georgia have affected its grape crop and its authorities may annul the ban on the import of grapes, and part of Armenian grape is very likely to go to that country. As a result the supply to the local market will reduce," he explained.
According to Harutyunyan, the situation in the Armenian grape market this year is unprecedented because for the first time in many years wine and vodka producers will be forced to concentrate on buying only locally grown grape.
He predicted that the price of red grape varieties will exceed 400 drams per 1 kg, the price for Areni varieties will be 370-380 drams, white grapes from Vayots Dzor region will be priced at 400 drams, red grapes from Ararat valley – at 250 drams and white grape – at 170 drams .
He also explained that if in past Pernod Ricard reduced the purchase price for grapes to 90 drams, this year the announced price will be the minimal and will not change.
Harutyunyan recalled that at the beginning of the year he had predicted a 30% increase in the harvest of grape, however, the crop was affected by insufficient irrigation and fungal diseases. "Nevertheless, we expect that winegrowers will gather more 90,000 tons," he said. ($ 1 - 482.76 drams). -0-
