YEREVAN, August 15. /ARKA/. US Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills said today that Armenian businessmen who intend to conduct business operations with Iran should consult with the US embassy in Yerevan in order to avoid incurring losses because of anti-Iranian sanctions.
He said the US sanctions imposed on Iran are not meant to harm or somehow affect Armenia. He said the US government remains true to its position in terms of assisting Armenia in economic development.
Mills said the sanctions are aimed at organizations and individuals who are involved in the financing of terrorism and in committing terrorist acts in Iraq. He added that the sanctions apply to specific Iranian structures and entrepreneurs involved in this activity.
The first batch of anti-Iranian sanctions took effect on August 7, and targeted Tehran's purchase of US banknotes, trade in gold and other precious metals, the use of graphite, aluminum, steel, coal, and software used in industrial processes.
Another round of sanctions, to be reinstalled on November 5, will be slapped on Iran's port, energy, shipping and shipbuilding sectors, its petroleum-related transactions, and business deals by foreign financial institutions with the Central Bank of Iran.
The European Union (Germany, France and also the UK which is exiting the Union, which are signatories to the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program) are in favor of preserving the nuclear deal, and also promise to take measures to protect European companies doing business with Tehran.
On August 7, the European Commission prohibited residents of member countries to comply with US sanctions. Also these companies have the right to demand compensation for losses incurred as a result of US sanctions.
Iran says it is ready to return to the negotiating table with the United States after Washington resumes the agreements concluded within the framework of the nuclear program. -0-
