YEREVAN, October 17. / ARKA /. Manvel Ghazarian, the chief executive director of Vedi Alco, an Armenian wine-making company, said today it may procure 1,250 metric tons of grapes this year, as much as it bought last year.

Speaking to journalists he said the winery had procured already 658 tons of grapes, of which 480 tons were purchased from wine growers and the rest was gathered from its own vineyards. Ghzaryan said the winery pays 220 drams per one kg of Areni variety.

He also spoke against setting a fixed price for purchase of grapes saying higher quality and best varieties should be more expensive. According to him, despite the fact that the company no longer needs to purchase grapes, it will continue procurements not to breach earlier signed contracts with farmers.

Ghazaryan said company’s sales dropped in the first 9 months of 2012 due to a 50 percent decline in exports. He explained that two Russian companies, selling Vedi Alco’s wines in Russia, were stripped of their licenses this year. This in view, he said the company is taking steps to win new markets, particularly in China, Germany and Mongolia.

The chief manager of the company said 30% of production is exported, while domestic sales did not change.

Vedi Alco comprises Getap and Vedi wineries, founded in 1938 and 1956 respectively. The company also grows grapes in its own vineyards on 150 hectares of land in Ararat valley. ($ 1 – AMD 407.69). -0-
