Yerevan Metro is 40 years old

YEREVAN, March 5. /ARKA/. Passengers traveling by Yerevan's Metro (subway) will have the opportunity to see a display of photographs telling the facility's history, the acting CEO of Metro Gevorg Avetisyan told a news conference today.
He said the exhibitions dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the facility will be organized at Yeritasardakn and Republican Square stations starting from March 7.
In 2010 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) released 5 million euro loan to Armenia to carry on the rehabilitation and upgrade of Yerevan Metro. The EBRD’s sovereign loan was co-financed by an EIB €5 million loan tranche and an additional investment grant of €5 million from the EU’s NIF.
The money was used as part of Phase I and Phase II to extend the facility's drainage tunnel to save electricity due to reduced water pumping costs, to train the personnel, to build carriage washing center and so on.
Avetisyan said also that for the first time in its history, the Metro stopped working between April 1 and May 17 as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.
“In 2019 we transported almost 21 million passengers, in 2020 this number fell to 11 million. At the moment, we transport an average of 50-55 thousand passengers a day," he said.
Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan announced on August 4, 2020 that a new Metro station in the capital's Ajapnyak district will be built by the government. According to him, the new station will cost Yerevan $35 million.
The Yerevan Metro launched in 1981 runs on a 13.4 kilometer line and currently serves 10 active stations. -0
