YEREVAN, June 6. /ARKA/. Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan told on Monday the head of trade and service department of the municipality and the head of Kentron administrative district in the capital to start negotiations with the owners of trade stalls in downtown Firdusi Street with the aim of relocating them to other retail outlets in the city as the street itself and the nearby area will be rebuilt into a round square with multi-storey underground parking lots.

The area will have also new streets, public and service facilities, business centers and hotels, the municipality said in a statement.

It quoted Margaryan as dismissing rumors that the trade outlets on Firdusi Street will be closed without offering an alternative.

Margaryan was quoted as saying also that trade stalls owners who will be moved to other trading centers should not pay rent for some time. The mayor was said to order to resolve the matter within a week.

According to the municipality, all architectural monuments on the area will be preserved and  the 5 hectare area will be rebuilt with 5-7 floor building. It said new streets will connect it to Vernissage open-air market selling traditional Armenian art works.
The cost of this 3-4 year project is estimated at $300 million. -0-
