Yerevan residents spend $97 million a month on essentials

Residents of the Armenian capital city spend about $97 million a month on essential commodities, according to Karen Martirosyan , an expert of Ameria company, who unveiled today the findings of an extensive market survey. He said the annual figure is over $1.2 billion.

YEREVAN, November 9. / ARKA /. Residents of the Armenian capital city spend about $97 million a month on essential commodities, according to Karen Martirosyan , an expert of Ameria company, who unveiled today the findings of an extensive market survey. He said the annual figure is over $1.2 billion.

He said the survey found that supermarkets account for 39 percent of this figure with four largest of which accounting for 30 percent. 
"According to our estimates, the turnover of supermarkets this year will be 476 billion drams. We expect this figure to grow to 660 billion drams in 2015," Martirosyan said.

He said per capita monthly spending on essentials is 37,000; also 370,000 people do their shopping in supermarkets daily.
The survey involved 1,026 people aged over 18, who were selected based on their residence, age, economic activity and income. According to Martirosyan, according to the study, the main buyers in Yerevan are women. 

The survey has also found that the younger generation of Armenians is eating out more often. 

The study found also that consumers pay greater attention to such factors as quality, freshness of goods and only then look at price 
tags. When buying household goods the quality is the priority, Martirosyan said. Martirosyan also said supermarkets in Yerevan are visited by all segments of the population.

"The stereotype that supermarkets are for the rich only does not exist any longer,’ he said. 

This was the first such study in Armenia, which available in the company. It provides an analysis of macro environment, retail sector; provides also information about the main participants of the market of essential commodities, demand for such products, trends in Central and Eastern Europe.

Ameria company’s chief consultant Tigran Jrbashyan said such surveys will be made regularly to help businessmen, investors, government regulators and financial institutions to implement correct policies.
