YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. Georgia has allowed several Armenian trucks with alcohol to cross its border, but the problem with the export of cognac spirit has not yet been resolved, said RA Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan.

“Unfortunately, I must state that the problem has not been resolved. This implies an institutional approach and, first of all, it is necessary to understand the reasons. The reasons for the current situation are unclear to us, we are trying to find a solution to the problem at a certain level,” Papoyan said at a briefing on Thursday.

The minister said that he plans to visit Georgia in the coming days to try to resolve all existing issues on the spot.

About the protest

On May 13, a group of Armenian alcohol producers held a protest in front of the Georgian embassy in Yerevan. They demanded a meeting with the Georgian ambassador to understand why the alcoholic beverages they produce (mainly cognac), exported through Georgia to Russia or the Baltic countries, are subject to inspections in the transit country.

Spontaneous laboratory inspections of dozens of trucks from Armenia exporting alcoholic products to Russia or the Baltic countries through the Upper Lars checkpoint have been reported for about 1.5 months. Due to delays in inspection, Armenian exporters suffer financial losses.
