YEREVAN, June 13. /ARKA/. The annual damage caused to Armenia’s agriculture by various natural disasters averages AMD10-13bln ($28.5-37mln), Head of Department for plant cultivation and forestry of the Armenian Agriculture Ministry Garnik Petrosian told a press conference.
“This year was not an exception, fortunately at the moment the damage has not been of great volume, but still it has been recorded,” he said.
According to Petrosian, serious damage was recorded due to flooding. He also reported that following the instruction of the Prime-Minister, working groups were set up involving agricultural and town planning specialists, as well as experts of the Administration for Emergencies. The specialists studied the situation on the spot and evaluated the volume of the damage. The outcome is to be summed up and submitted for discussion in the government in the near future.
According to preliminary information, the total damage from the floods, including roads, houses and irrigation infrastructures, made AMD2bln this year, with the damage to agriculture being AMD420 mln.
He also said that agriculture, particularly the apricot orchards, suffered form showers to a certain extent this year. Unfavorable conditions did not have serious impact on kernel fruits, sweet cherry trees partly suffered though.
“In recent years the government appropriates considerable funds for mitigating the consequences of the damage,” he said. N.V. –0--
