Shortage of high quality raw-material is the main problem of wine-making in Armenia, said Avag Harutyunyan, Head of Winemakers’ Union of Armenia.

YEREVAN, March 17. /ARKA/. Shortage of high quality raw-material is the main problem of wine-making in Armenia, said Avag Harutyunyan, Head of Winemakers’ Union of Armenia.

“We have shortage of expensive high quality sorts of grapes from which we could make wine relevant to international standards. If we start to grow such grapes, we can have high quality wines in 20-25 years”, said Harutyunyan.

There are no necessary studies of 400 sorts of grapes in Armenia.

He mentioned about the importance of struggle against phylloxera which is not conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture. Union of Winemakers’ is ready to discuss this issue.

In January-December 2009 increase of wine production by 30.8% to 4372.1 thousand liters was registered and production of champaign wines was 456.4 thousand liters (decline of 1.7%). G.K. -0-
