YEREVAN, May 26, /ARKA/. Boris Hovhanesian, director general of Tamara Fruit company, said today the company will double production of organic raspberries this year to 60 metric tons.

Speaking to journalists in Azatamut village of Tavush province where the company has land plots to grow blackberries, currents and raspberries, he said the company’s project to establish organic orchards was backed last year by a government subsidy of 300 million Drams.

The program calls for establishment of 60 hectares of organic orchards which will have 450,000 seedlings of blackberries, raspberries and current.

According to Hovhanesian, Armenia has currently 20 hectares of organic orchards- 12 in Vayots Dzor, 5 in Tavush and 3 in Kotayk provinces.

“Cultivation of one hectare of land creates 5 jobs and when harvesting season begins we hire 20 more people,’ he said.

Twenty other companies have applied to agricultural ministry to seek support for their projects of establishing new organic orchards. It is expected that some 20 hectares of new orchards will be built this year in Tavush, Vayots Dzor and Aragatsotn provinces. ( $1 - - 383.6 Drams). -0-
