YEREVAN, September 1, /ARKA/. Armenia’s agriculture minister Gerasim Alaverdian shrugged off Monday speculations that wine growers may face problems in selling their grape. Speaking at a news conference he said contracts were signed with all major procuring companies.
‘We have met with chief managers of all wineries and other processing companies having agreed to set the average price of 120 Drams per one kg of grape,’ he said.
According to the agricultural ministry’s estimates, wine growers are expected to gather about -215,000 metric tons of grape this year, up from 185,000 tons last year. Some experts say only 65,000 tons of it will be procured by wineries. But these concerns were downplayed by the minister who said wine growers will face no problems in selling their grape.
He advised that farmers water the vineyards before gathering it so that the percentage of sugar in it rises to 18 percent. He also called on farers to handle grape cautiously. The minister said the wineries that owned money to farmers for last year’s grape paid it off. -0-
