Armenia Has No Energy Security Problems: Russian Expert

‘Armenia does not have energy security problems ,’ said today Konstantin Simonov, head of the Moscow-based National Energy Security Fund during a video-bridge between Yerevan and Moscow.
YEREVAN, October 1, /ARKA/. ‘Armenia does not have energy security problems ,’ said today Konstantin Simonov, head of the Moscow-based National Energy Security Fund during a video-bridge between Yerevan and Moscow.

‘Energy is certainly not Armenia’s weak point and I think it has good chances to generate much more than it consumes. But the point is it is not clear what Armenia is going to do with energy surplus because it will hardly sell it to some of its neighbors.’ He said.

Konstantin Simonov said Armenia’s problem is that its neighbors are implementing large energy projects that have their impact on Armenia’s energy sector.

‘As a matter of fact, Armenia has become hostage to a big game unfolding around the Caspian Sea. Armenia has what many other countries dream to have - a 40-50% energy surplus but the question is what do with it. Is Armenia ready to implement energy consuming projects?’ he said.

According to government data, Armenian power generating facilities produce annually about 6 billion KWh electrical power and unlike some of its neighbors Armenia t can export electricity to Turkey and Georgia. It also has energy swaps with neighboring Iran. According to Simonov, if Armenian authorities display what he called a ‘creative’ thinking they can find a solution to this issue. –0—
